The Craft Behind Every Print: Block Printing in Jaipur

Every piece at Threads of Gulab starts in Bagru and Sanganer, two neighborhoods outside Jaipur where hand block printing has been practiced for generations.

The process hasn't changed much. Teakwood blocks are still carved by hand, each one taking days to finish. Dyes are still mixed in small batches from natural pigments, which is part of why the color can vary slightly from one length of fabric to the next.

We think that variation is worth keeping. A machine print looks the same every time; a hand-block print doesn't, because it was pressed by a person, one motif at a time. No two of our pieces are printed exactly alike — that's not a limitation of the process, it's the point of it.
